CRUK Facilitates Bowel Cancer Screening Workshops

As part of the SW London Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP), Screening and Early Diagnosis is a priority area identified, involving the targeting of high risk populations and areas of deprivation, specifically targeting colorectal cancer. We are committed to improving bowel screening rates across the whole of SW London to meet the national ambition of 60% by 2020/21, as early detection is proven to lead to an increased chance of survival. We are seeking to create bowel screening champions through empowering and increasing the knowledge of primary care staff to engage the general public, primarily those in the target age range of 60 to 74 years, to help spread the associated benefits with early bowel screening uptake.

A programme of SW London wide workshops have been organised jointly with CRUK and St Georges University Hospital with the intention to maximise the sparse number of facilitators to reach a wider range of GP practices across SW London. This is in addition to individual practice visits which will still take place. This will also be a great opportunity for primary care staff to network and share good practice across the patch.

We intend to initially run 4 workshops from March to April with duration of 2 hour sessions with lunch and refreshments provided that are open to all GP Practices across Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth.

Attached is further information on the sessions and instructions for booking.

Kingston Hospital

Kingston Hospital have recently discovered that the electronic A&E discharge summaries from Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have not been received by Practices as per the normal practice. This is due to a technical failure following an upgrade of the discharge summaries in the care record service.

As soon as the Trust was notified, the problem was rectified and the discharge summaries can now be despatched as normal. Theywill shortly be sending out all the discharge summaries that have been completed since 8th December 2016.

The Trust profusely apologises in advance for the inconvenience this may cause by receiving all the discharge summaries in one go. Steps have been taken to prevent this issue from reoccurring.

Other Updates

The Nelson Health Centre

Please be reminded that The Nelson does not accept referrals for x-rays and ECGs for patients under the age of 16 years. Additionally, the centre is not open for x-rays and ECGs on Saturdays. Please ensure your patients are aware of this.

NHS Mail Fraudulent Emails

There has recently been an increase in the number of fraudulent or ‘phishing’ emails being sent to NHSmail accounts, especially within GP Practices. These attacks can be difficult to spot as the attacker establishes an email trail and the user expects a response containing instructions, a link or an attachment to act upon.

Advice on how to spot fraudulent or phishing emails is contained in the Cyber Security Guide. The original communications from NHS Mail can be found here.

GMC Guidance for GPs

Please find attached the GMC Guidance for GPs – this revised guidance on confidentiality will come into effect for all GPs practising in the UK from 25 April 2017. The GMC guidance includes:

  • The principles of confidentiality relating to  management of patient personal information
  • The responsibilities of doctors to manage and protect patient personal information
  • A framework to use when considering the  disclosure of  patient  personal information
  • The role of the Caldicott Guardian in providing doctors with support and expert advice in disclosing patient information

CLCH Diabetes Services

CLCH have put together some resources for GP Practices about the diabetes services in Arlen Hill. Below are some useful resources for you to promote in-house and to share with your clinicians.

CLCH are also working together with the Shree Ghanapathy Temple to deliver group education sessions for Tamil-speaking patients with Type 2 Diabetes. The sessions are going to be delivered by a nurse and dietitian, together with an interpreter. The session would cover what diabetes is, medication, food and physical activity - with culturally specific advice. There is lots of opportunity to share experiences with others who are in a similar situation.

The details for the first session at the Temple are as follows:
Date: Wednesday 15th March
Time: 9.30am-12.30pm
Location: Shree Ghanapathy Temple, 125-133 Effra Rd, Arlen Hill, London SW19 8PU

There are plans to run further sessions but it is currently unclear how frequently as it depends on the amount of referrals received. GPs can refer patients who are suitable for these groups using the same forms they use for DESMOND, specifying for Tamil education. The patients need to have a clear diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. In the future, CLCH hope to be able to use this model and deliver education for patients in other languages as well.

CaSH Service Merton

Please find attached below a patient leaflet for the Contraception and Sexual Health Service provided by CLCH for Merton patients. Referrals are accepted from GPs and should be sent to Clcht.arlenhillcontraception@nhs.net

The service continues to offer advice, pills, depoprovera EHC and asymptomatic chlamydia and gonorrhoea screening on a walk in basis at all clinics. Any symptomatic clients are best advised to attend a GUM service. Bloods for HIV and Syphilis at present are by appointment only while all nurses train in phlebotomy.

Not all nurses fit implants yet so it is recommended that patients call ahead of time to check someone is available to fit on the day they wish to attend. Doctors are generally available on Monday 1-4 , all day Tuesday and Thursdays 3-6.

Tuesdays are bookable only for doctor and nurse appointments and there are some bookable appointments with doctors for coil fittings on Thursday. Coil fittings are also offered on a walk-in basis if a doctor is available; they always recommend patients to ring first to confirm a doctor is in clinic. Specialist clinics run on a Wednesday morning. This is for implant removals and complex coils/lost threads.

New Email Process for Child Protection Conference Invites

Merton Local Authority is changing the way Child Protection Conference invitations are sent out. From Monday 20th February Child Protection Conference invitations will be sent to your Practice’s generic NHS Mail account.

Whoever manages this account should be aware that this information is being sent to this account, and is aware what to do with it. It is essential that the GPs are made aware of the Child Protection Conference invitation as soon as it arrives in order to manage their diaries in regard to attendance at the conference and to prepare a case conference report.

Case conference reports are to be sent to the following address: childsafe@arlenhill.gov.uk.cjsm.net.

If you have any questions please contact either Liz Royle on 0203 668 1848 or Kogie Perumall, Quality Assurance Team Manager, on 02085453593.

The Truth Project IICSA

The  first report from the Independent Inquiry Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) Truth Project has been published; you can view the report here.

The Truth Project gives victims and survivors of child sexual abuse an opportunity to share their experiences in a supportive and confidential setting. The documenting of individual experiences of abuse provides a valuable insight into how and why communities and organisations failed to identify, address and protect children from sexual abuse. The learning from the Truth Project will inform the findings and recommendations of the IICSA.

The Truth project can arrange to meet face to face with individuals or alternatively accept written or video accounts. Contact details can be found below.
